Bullguard Firewall

I am currently trialling BG premium, and I was under the impression that Bullguard used its own firewall, but im told it now uses Aviras engine which just uses Windows Defenders own built in firewall?? could someone confirm please??

Could you share the link of the page you read about this? It's incorrect.

BullGuard and Avira are now part of NortonLifeLock. However, BullGuard always had it's own firewall. 

The BullGuard Firewall is built on top of the Windows Firewall, namely the later handles the low level rules, while the BullGuard Firewall handles the application rules. There is a lot going on under the hood to make this not only extremely performant to other firewall designs, but also very secure.
