Hi

I have a laptop, [Windows vista home Premium] which has been off for over a month due to a broken external power supply. I renewed my external power supply and got a few days of happiness from it, but now I am not able to go online and windows explorer pops up like mad saying that it has stopped working.

I loaded AVG 8.5 which seemed to find in excess of 160000 trojan horses, after which I felt that the problem would be over, but the problem has not disappeared at all. I am at your mercy, as you guys have helped me with my other computers in the past.

Many thanks for your help.

Hello eldersteve,

That 160,000 is an awfully large number for infection finds, in any situation. Before we look info anything, what malware name did AVG say all these infected items were? A concern, when dealing with such large file numbers, is that the system has a file infector such as Virut (see here).

Hi

Thanks for replying. The main Trojan was 'trojan horse VB.GMA' there were also a few backdoor trojans, and vundo, which I had seen before, but this one was really different, i have to admit. Hope this helps.

other trojans were:

FakeAlert.FX

BackDoor.Ircbot.HCZ

Vundo.FJ

but, as i said before, mostly VB.GMA

Thanks again

I am not familiar enough with AVG's naming to recognize that "vb.gma" right off, though it seems like a Visual Basic file issue of some sort. Let's check things for now.

If you have problems running these scans try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking (at startup tap F8 and select Safe Mode with Networking from the menu)

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop, then click on the RSIT.exe to start the scan.

If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed.

Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.

RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).

You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.

Malware has been, and still is, loaded there, and this looks like it includes an autorun component as well. One file loading in that I would like to check. You didn't post back the second info.txt log, so for now I will work from assumption about what all is installed there.

Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

Then just go here, press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to your post back here. Then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the file(s) on your computer.

C:\Users\TJ\TJ.exe

You DO NOT need to be a member to upload, anybody can upload the files. You will not be able to see the file once uploaded.

---------------------

The malware has included an autorun type component, so if any external drives have been used on this computer recently be sure to install them now, and leave them installed until ALL repairs on it are completed. If not, they will remain infected and can re-infect the computer (or others).

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Click here and download Flash_Disinfector.exe and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts. Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.

The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other external/removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.

Then leave any drives installed until all repairs here have been completed.

This will also create autorun.inf folders on all drives there, which serves to block autoloading infection from creating some of their bad files they need to infect other drives and systems.

Open Notepad (Start/Windows "Orb" - Start Search, type notepad and OK) and copy and paste the text (inside the box) above and paste it into the open Notepad textbox.

Save this to your desktop as "fixer.reg"

Be sure to include the "" quotes in the name.

Then right click fixer.reg, select Merge, and allow it to merge the new information with the Registry.

------------------

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. If it calls for a reboot to complete the repairs do that as well then.

---------------------

Run a new RSIT scan and post that main log along with the Malwarebytes log please. Also the second RSIT log, located at C:\rsit\info.txt please.

Hi

I have posted the link and uploaded the file as you have asked. However, when trying to open flash_disinfector.exe the application was blocked, saying that it has stopped working and that windows is seeking for a solution.

I cannot load malwarebytes either.

Not sure what to do here.

Help.

Hi

Forgot to mention, I also tried more than one setting in safe mode and even this hasn't worked.

Is my only option left to reformat the hardrive?

Reformatting and reinstalling is always the best method to eliminate infection, and also often the least desirable one. Which is in part why we offer this type of assistance. I received the file, thanks. Encrypted code in it, but it does make a connection to an "theimageparlour.net", I assume to either offload or download data.

There is almost enough info in these logs to make an aggressive move against the infection, but if we delete malware files/settings that other parts of the infection rely on, we also chance setting up a no-rebooter situation there. See if you can run this, to get better info on any unseen actions.

Click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.

If on it's opening scan Gmer locates items shown in red or indicates "hidden" or "rootkit", stop there, and click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please. We don't want any crashes just from taking an initial look at things.

If not, then click on Scan (before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan).

When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.

----------------

Open Gmer again. This time just right click in the white space in the display and select Options - Only non MS files. Then click Scan and allow Gmer to run a different scan. Once that completes click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.

Hi

It also now seems that I can load malwarebytes. If i can get it and flash disinfector to load and start should I also attempt to do a scan at this point or are we going down a sufficient road already which would not benefit from this option?

Thanks for all your help.

There's the initial rootkit target. Let's take that out then repair scan after.

Whenever you do any of these repairs, to keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.

Download The Avenger by Swandog from here.

Then unzip that, so it will create an avenger folder and an avenger.exe file.

Rename the avenger.exe file avvy.com then click that to run Avenger.

Okay the warning. When the Avenger display opens copy/paste the following text inside the Code box into the Avenger box titled "Input script here:". Then click the Execute button to run the repair, click Yes, then allow Avenger to reboot your system.
Begin copying here:
Drivers to delete:
UACd.sys
Files to delete:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\UACvheoqcdcqr.sys
Your system may reboot twice to complete the repairs. After the reboot a text will open - copy/paste those contents back here please. The log can also be found at C:\avenger.txt.

----------

Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, but I would like you to rename the file as you download it (do not download it directly without renaming it - use right click "Save Target/Link As" ). For this, rename the downloading file to 456out.com, then click the renamed 456out.com to run that scan.

Be sure to install the Recovery Console if you are asked to do so. When the scan completes, a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

Post back that log and the C:\avenger.txt log please.

Hi Jintan,

Thanks for all of your help, but I decided to reformat the drive, as nothing seemed to be working out and time was elapsing pretty quickly for me on my end.

Since I have done this, the system seems to have returned to normal function, though certain all of my files have been lost [which was to be expected].

Thank you for all of your help and support. You guys have never ceased to be a tower of strength to me in this area.

Thanks again.

Reformat and reinstall is the best measure to eliminate malware, though of course the toughest of the choices. Thanks for posting back the update.
